Election Success for Year 10 Student
Today, Friday 13th December 2019, it’s not just the newly elected Prime Minister celebrating success. Following mock elections at The Ebbsfleet Academy yesterday, Year 10 student, Ashley, representing the ‘Tomorrow’ party won with a landslide victory receiving an overwhelming majority of the votes.
Mirroring the general election, Year 10 citizenship students at the academy were tasked with forming their own parties, electing party leaders to act as the official representatives and creating their party election manifesto.
Parties competing in The Ebbsfleet Academy mock elections included:
- Vision Party
- Progress Party
- Transformation Party
- The Tomorrow Party
Citizenship education develops knowledge, skills and understanding that students need to play a full part in society as active and responsible citizens. Students learn about all aspects of democracy including politics, parliament and voting as well as human rights, justice, the law and the economy.
Crystal Cardnell, Vice Principal for The Ebbsfleet Academy said: “The mock elections brought to life the political process for the whole academy. The challenge of forming a party, working out the leadership and creating a manifesto, which they then launched to fellow students to gain their support was a rich learning experience. The process made the students think about and identify what changes they believe should be made to improve UK society. It highlighted how free and fair elections are crucial for a democracy and the importance of active participation of citizens to take part and have their say.
“I have been very impressed with all the candidates. Their speeches were well written and compelling. The confidence with which these speeches were delivered was inspirational. Congratulations to Ashley, he is a worthy winner.”
